Our outdoor environment

Outdoor play is a core part of our day. Each nursery has secure, age-appropriate outdoor areas directly accessible from the playrooms.

Children at our nurseries enjoy access to outdoor spaces throughout the day, making the most of our free-flow areas and main gardens whenever the weather allows. Each playroom has their own dedicated outdoor area or scheduled time in the garden, with activities carefully chosen to suit their stage of development and encourage active play.

To help your child enjoy the outdoors in every season, we ask parents to provide clearly named clothing suitable for all weathers. This includes a sun hat for sunny days, sun cream (factor 30+) is provided by the nursery, but you’re welcome to supply your own if you prefer.

In colder months, please provide wellington boots, hats, scarves, and gloves so your child can stay warm and comfortable while exploring outside. With the right clothing, children can enjoy fresh air, physical activity, and nature all year round.

Our approach

Gardens and free flow

Children benefit from canopied free flow spaces accessible directly from their playrooms, as well as gardens and nature areas for physical play and exploration.

Why outdoor play matters

Outdoor play is a vital part of every child’s development and wellbeing. At our nurseries, we believe that time spent outside is just as important as learning indoors, and we make the most of our gardens and outdoor spaces every day, in all seasons.

We encourage children to explore, take safe risks, and enjoy the changing seasons, whether it’s splashing in puddles, planting seeds, or searching for bugs. Our staff support children’s learning outdoors by providing a variety of activities and resources, and by joining in the fun.

The benefits of outdoor play include

Physical Development: Running, climbing, balancing, and exploring help children build strength, coordination, and confidence in their bodies.

Wellbeing & Mental Health: Fresh air, natural light, and the freedom to move support children’s emotional wellbeing and help reduce stress.

Curiosity & Discovery: Outdoor environments are full of opportunities for children to observe nature, ask questions, and learn about the world around them.

Social Skills: Playing together outside encourages teamwork, sharing, and problem-solving as children invent games and work together.

Imagination & Creativity: Open spaces inspire imaginative play, from building dens to pretending to be explorers or gardeners.

Resilience: Experiencing different weather, overcoming challenges, and trying new activities outdoors helps children build resilience and adaptability.
